Eyjafjallajökull has been constantly humming for a few days with earthquakes as deep as 20km. The position of the earthquakes reveal the magma pipe to the surface from the mantle. A quiet zone between about 5-8 km is probably the brittle-ductile transition zone. (Ed. 3June2010 - check out later posts on this topic in Science category. These don't clearly show a brittle ductile transition zone.)
